Club DJs vs. Mobile DJs
A "Club DJ" is someone who specializes in a particular style of music such as House, Retro or R&B, and looks for a venue to feature themselves and their music. A "Mobile DJ" on the other hand, is someone who brings a full DJ setup and a wide range of music, in order to provide a private event with the music requested by the client.

Generalist or Specialist?
If, for example, you are a "House" DJ, playing music in a "House" club, to an audience who enjoys listening to "House" music, then it would be hard not to please the crowd. Almost anyone who can buy records or cds can do this. If however, you are a mobile DJ at a 21st, with a crowd that ranges in age from 10 to 50, where people may want House, but they also want R&B and classic hits, you will need to refine your crowd reading skills in order to keep everyone happy, or else eventually you'll have an empty dance floor. It is important to first learn these generalist skills before becoming a specialist. This is how we work here at Northwest Mobile Sound & Lighting.

Our DJs - Generalists & Specialists
With most mobile events, we've learned to become generalists in our profession. This means that we first learn how to play music from the 50s to the latest hits and club tracks before we start to specialize in any particular style. This is an advantage over DJs who first learn how to be specialists, because the fundamental skills of crowd reading, taking requests, and structuring an event are understood very early in their DJ education. Specializing in a particular style thus becomes a non-issue. It's simply a matter of collecting more music.
